Mary Quant

I know it's been sooo long since my last post so shame on me!  I do have an excuse though and it is pretty passable.  Recently I've acquired a new job and school is starting to drive me crazy again.  Nonetheless, I can't stay away for too long and so I'm back.  Recently I discovered the 60's fashion genius Mary Quant, while looking through one of my textbooks.  I was actually pretty embarrassed for not having heard of her before but I'm still learning.  Turns out she was a very well-known designer in the 60's and many give her credit for the "mini skirt".  Remember this was considered a HUGE change from that "clean" 50's image.  Just thinking about the risk she had to take makes me want to yell out, "GO GIRL!"  Looking through photographs of her designs made me realize how incredibly talented she is!

Here are some of the pictures I fell in love with...

Short Attire

It's been terribly hot in golly-old Fresno for the past couple of months.  That is one thing I miss about Los Angeles, the forgiving weather.  Here in Central-Cali we definitely try to dress as cool as possible.  I had a job interview on the day I wore this and I didn't feel like suffocating in a suit.  So, I wore this!  That loyal pencil skirt always seems to come to my rescue (thank you skirt).  And as long as the weather is in the triple digits, I'm going to keep wearing the shortest things in my closet!

Thrifting Love Affair

It has been about a year and a half ago since I began acquiring vintage/thrifted clothing and other items.  An old wooden 1960's vanity dresser was the first piece to make me fall for the game.  You see I wasn't raised with the idea that it was alright to buy used clothing.  My mother always referred to it as a bad and dirty habit (I don't think she ever gave it a chance).  For this very reason I had never stepped inside a thrift store until the age of 20.  All these bloggers and youtube guru's were raving about how great it was.  I wanted to see for myself.  And so the collection began! I was missing out on so much!  My wallet soon became pretty plentiful for my closet (I loved that).  The broad selection of different garments made me happy.  I could now mix and match as many times as I wanted! This is definitely a great tool for all of us college students that are under a budget and still want to look fashionable.  Sure I still buy clothing from the mall (when I can) and mix it with the thrifted goods.  I learned that saving money is far from a dirty habit.  It's called being smart!

Some tips for begginers!

  • Always wear flats! (You are going to be doing a lot of walking, digging, and browsing).
  • Take hand sanitizer (Okay, so it's not a dirty habit but it's still a thrift store.  Not everything is clean).
  • Carry a small purse (You don't want to have your arms full with something heavy).
  • Take your time and look through every corner.  There are always hidden treasures!

Here are a few of the gorgeous pieces I have collected!

Stripe Me Down

I think this outfit is perfect for "in the middle" of Summer and Fall.  The pastel stripes on my blouse (scored at a thrift store), scream colors of Summer.  My blue high waist jean shorts that only come out on those hot days.  I've been feeling a little bit of boots and nylon's lately, and I think they will become a Fall staple for me this year.  I could probably come up with several outfit combination's to go with the pair.  So, I will.

Risque Days

This was an outfit I wore while still in Los Angeles.  For those of you familiar with the area, I'm sure you can tell I was in Little Tokyo! I'm not going to lie, I felt really hardcore wearing these nylons and high-waist shorts. The morning of, I kept questioning whether this outfit was a bit too "risque".  I've found that outfits that take you out of your comfort zone are the best ones! Plus, in L.A anything goes and that's what I love about the city!

Peplum Blues

Today is my last day in the magical city of Los Angeles, which makes me deeply sad.  I've enjoyed every minute of my adventure.  It feels like I'm saying goodbye forever even though, I know my path will lead me back very soon. Lately, I've been so inspired and I know it's due to being here.  So until next time! Here's an outfit for the road.

Tropical Skirt

This tropical printed skirt just gave me the eye today and was screaming "wear me!"  I couldn't say no!  So I wore it and threw on some polka dotted nylons to go with it!

Blue Paisley

Sometimes all a girl needs is a vintage blouse, paired with some high-waisted shorts, and a thrifted belt.
